Description: These pins measure approx. 1" and have a union bug printed beneath the curl. Excellent condition. Ron Cobb created an ecology symbol which he published on Oct. 25, 1969 in the Los Angeles Free Press and then placed in the public domain. The symbol was formed by taking the letters "e" and "o" (from "environment" and "organism") forming a shape reminiscent of the Greek letter Theta. The theta symbol is associated with the Grekk word "thanatos", or "death" in light of human threats to the environment and the atmosphere of the earth. In 1970 Look Magazine incorporated the symbol into an image of a flag (patterned after the US flag with 13 stripes, a green field for unspoiled land and a white field for clean air) in their April 21, 1970 issue, thus popularizing it.
