A chess set For The Man Who Has Everything. There is a company in the Italian Tyrol, called ANRI. The company has been in business for close to a century. They make hand-carved wood items. They formerly carved wood chess sets, but they have since ceased that practice. All ANRI wood sets today are collector's items. We have here the Arthur Elliot Space Age set. This is commonly called "Modern Anri Space-Age Universum Chess Set." There are also poured plastic-moulded sets of this design.The chessmen were designed by U.S. artist Arthur Elliott, who also worked as an early animator for Disney Studios. The King stands just over 4 inches tall. Base diameter of the king is 1 inch. The hand-carved Anri Space Age Chess pieces are crafted from kiln-dried White Maple (the White chess men) and Black Walnut (the Black chess men). Kiln drying prevents cracking from green wood. The pieces in the Anri Space Age Chess Set are abstract representations of Space Stations (kings), Space Ships (queens), Missiles (bishops), Rockets (pawns), Satellites (knights) and Radar (rooks). The set comes with the original ANRI display box complete with the original ANRI sticker. We have added extra items to increase the value of the display. Jerger "King" Chess Clock: The German chess clock company Jerger offered this design back in the 1980s. The clock is designed for tournament chess. It features a tilt-back design for easy reading of the dials. It is quiet and movements are smooth. It was the Mercedes-Benz of chess clocks. Both movements work well. I have done a bench test on each side and the clocks keep accurate time. Because of changes in the rules of U.S. Chess Federation, this clock, like all analog clocks, are now disfavored but still legal. This clock is primarily a mantelpiece clock. Because of the vagaries of shipping, I cannot guarantee that the clock will run when it arrives. With these older, mechanical, spring-driven beauties, it is a good idea to exhaust both clock movements when you are through using them. Most chess players are in the bad habit of leaving their clocks wound for months or years, which takes a toll on them. I regret I do not have the original box for the clock. A very similar clock to this one recently sold at auction for $275. Board and cloth: The board is a folding board. It has a small scratch. We have added this very rare Drueke red cloth storage bag to store the board when not in use or on display. Board is 16 1/2 inches square; each square is 1 3/4 inches square. It provides hours of reading pleasure plus the added cachet when on display. Poster: July 1, 1972: Bobby Fischer arrives nine minutes late to start his first game against Boris Spassky in their epic world championship match. An Icelandic artist, Halldur Petursson, drew up cartoon caricatures for the match. They were put on postcards. This is a reprint of the first of the postcards; you can see where the original stamp and franking marks appear on the original. The originals are collector's items now. To commemorate the start of the match, we are reproducing the first card as a sheet suitable for framing. We reprinted this on light cardstock. This is not an original. Poster suitable for framing.
