Woodcarving, in particular, is a revered art form going back centuries. The woodcarving villages of Tegallalang and Jati north of Ubud, along with the route from Mas to Peliatan having changed little. Familiar, recurring themes being scenes and deities from Hindu epic poems like the Mahabharata, going back some 3,500 years. Belalu, a fast growing Balinese softwood, is widely used in such panels as these, particularly lending itself to showcasing the time honoured skills of Balinese craftsmen.
