Description: This Kachina maiden fetish is small, striking piece of Zuni art made from turquoise, black onyx, serpentine, travertine, and possibly soapstone. The various stones are hand-carved and stacked, with subtle lines etched across the maiden's skirt. The headdress is a single piece of matrixed turquoise, and the eyes and mouth small drilled heishi beads. Zuni maiden figurals are not as common as animal fetishes. The fetish was likely purchased in the 1980s but possibly not framed until early 1990s. It is not common to frame fetishes, but the flat back of the Kachina lent itself to being displayed this way. The frame is rustic hewn wood, with shadowbox matting that complements the colors of the stones. The kachina figurine measures about 1-5/8" wide at the widest point by about 3-1/4" long. The shadowbox frame is 6-1/2" wide by a little over 9" long. A unique gift for any collector of Native American art. The item you are purchasing is the one shown in the pictures.
