Description: Vintage French Dark Green Glass Demijohn “Bonbonne” Wine Bottle Wire and RaffiaThis rustically charming old French demijohn is actually a 2 ½ gallon green glass wine bottle encased in wire and braided raffia. In French it is called a “bonbonne”, as well as a “Dame-Jeanne”, in honor of the first Queen Jeanne of Naples, Countess of Provence, who encouraged a Provencal glassmaker to create this type of wine bottle in a basket. This demijohn has a handle in woven raffia. This charming demijohn was used -- as they still are today in France -- to preserve wine or fruit brandy, “eau de vie”. This particular one came from the Armagnac region in Southwest France. It is in good condition with the exception of some chips to the top edge of the neck and signs of wear on the outside due to age and use. Please refer to the detailed photos on this page.
