Description: Vintage French Oil on Panel, “Flower Market at the Place de La Madeleine in Paris” This charming vintage French oil on panel shows the historic flower market in the square surrounding the Madeleine church in Paris which stands at the end of the fashionable Rue Royale. In the foreground we see the flowersellers' stands and a few people milling around amidst the winter trees, in the background we see the buildings surrounding the square. At the far left is one of the famous old “Morris” columns, a Parisian trademark. The Morris columns were tall, cylindrical structures for displaying posters, developed at the end of the 19th and early 20th centuries, and which became emblematic of Paris streets. The Madeleine church, in neoclassical style, was consecrated in 1845 after nearly seventy five years of construction. The Madeleine flower market was opened on the east side of the church in 1832 with permission from the Paris police chief to sell flowers every Tuesday and Friday - the market is still in existence nearly two hundred years later! It has been depicted in the paintings of numerous artists over the course of time, such as Eugène Galien Laloue (1854-1941), Antoine Blanchard (1910-1988) or Edouard Cortes (1882-1969). This charming painting brings to life all the ambiance of Parisian streets and markets. Both painting and the frame are in very good condition, with the exception of a few signs of wear to the edge of the frame. An old sticker on the back identifies the panel as being a “Van Eyck” panel in fibre de bois. Please refer to the detailed photos on this page.
