Description: Antique Humorous Fox Hunt Print Drawn & Etched by Henry Alken. It is rare to find a set of three together. I am listing them individually but would take offers for the set of three. They are hand-colored aquatint plates with the notation Drawn & Etched by H Alken. My research indicates these were from the mid- 1800s and were made by Henry Thomas Alken (1785-1851), the famous English painter and engraver best known for humorous illustrations of people and sports. He was considered to be one of the finest printmakers of his time and was a keen sportsman, so he was able to convey the fun and excitement of sports. He was especially skillful in aquatint engraving, a very time-consuming and difficult technique, hence rarer than most other forms of printing. Alken's are wonderfully detailed and have original hand-painted colors. They are considered by antique print collectors to be some of the best of rural sports. The set includes the following prints: #1: HIS REVERENCE SWIMS LIKE A CORK : Horses Crossing a stream with one swimming instead #2: NOT HANDEL'S SWEET MUSIC MORE PLEASES THE EAR, THAN THAT OF THE HOUNDS IN FULL CRY : Horses and riders galloping over the fields #3: YOU ARE WORTH DOUBLE WHAT I GAVE FOR YOU! : Hunting on horses This listing is for #1 - HIS REVERENCE SWIMS LIKE A CORK. This print has some mold/dirt under the glass in one corner but I do not believe it has impacted the print and it appears to be cleanable . The print itself appears to be in wonderful condition. There is some waviness to the paper and the neutral color mat around the print shows the most age and dirtiness. The frame was really nice in its day. It is a thin wood frame with a painted tan front, red inner edges and black outer edges. Unfortunately it was stored in such a way as the screws from the hanging wires damaged the edges of the frames from the three being stacked together. I would suggest taking the frame apart, cleaning everything and touching up the paint on the frame and it would look amazing! The back has brown finishing paper and a hanging wire. The paper shows it's age. Dimensions: As framed - 12 3/4" x 16" x 1/2" Print - 8 1/2" x 11 3/4" These are being offered individually, but I would sell as a set of three for a discount, There is limited amount of pictures I can include on this listing so please do not hesitate to contact me if you want more images or would like to discuss buying all three.
