Description: This is a rare figural tea box that is ornately detailed using the Raden technique. This decorative technique uses the iridescent parts of seashells like abalone, turban shells and pearl oysters. This box was decorated using the thinnest cuts of the shell (Kenma). The beauty of Raden comes from the contrast between the jewel-like lustre of the seashells and the deep tones of the lacquer. It is in the form of a tortoise and in traditional Japanese beliefs the shell is a haven for immortals and the world mountain and symbolizes longevity, good luck and support. It is the symbol for Kompira, God of seafaring people. This is definitely a unique box. It appears to be a hybrid of a tortoise and a man? or a snail? I'm not exactly sure but it is truly an amazing piece of Japanese art. Box measures approximately 2.5" x 2.5" GOOD USED CONDITION WITH MINIMAL WEARSome wear to finish and a small chip on the underside of the lid.
