Description: Up for your consideration is this Vintage John Schulps (1940-2010) California Artist MCM Pottery Signed Ashtray. It measures approximately 7 1/8” diameter x 1 7/8” tall. It has the classic John Schulps matte glaze. There is a small flake on the bottom rim & some light crazing around the 6 notches as seen in the photos. It is signed in iron on the base Schulps. There is no residual smell on the ashtray but if it could talk I’m sure it would have some good stories. Per Vasefinder; John Schulps was born and reared in Southern California. He received his undergraduate degree from CSU Northridge. He received his advanced degree from UCLA. In the 1960's, he played professional football and then for many years coached youth and high school football teams in Orland, California. John taught ceramics at Moorpark Junior College, as well as he had several apprentices over the years. In addition to creating powerful functional studio pottery forms, he also produced knives and worked in several mediums. For many years, his work was sold through renaissance faires, where he developed a loyal following. A portion of his pottery exhibition record includes: Mid-Summer Share-in, UCLA Sunset Canyon Recreation Center, Los Angeles, California, 1969; Pottery Demonstration for Friends of the of the Leonis Adobe, Artist's Studio, Calabasas, California, 1971; Calabasas Pumpkin Festival, Calabasas, California, 1972; Renaissance Pleasure Faire, Paramount Ranch, Agoura Hills, California, 1972; Long Beach Museum of Art Sale, Long Beach, California, 1974.
