Description: Vintage MILLERS FALLS CO Steel Plumb Bob 4.9 oz. I believe this to be a very early item possibly late 1800's or during or right before WW1.Prior to it becoming common practice to nickel plate or chrome tools a process known as japanning was used this was a baked on black coating used to protect metal. Various elements were used from lacquers, asphalts, resins, mixtures, etc. Then during WW1 manufacturers were informed not to 'waste' critical recourses on non-critical components (nickel/chrome/etc) and japanning was used again on some tools and components. Then again in WW2 although to a lessor extent as advances in paints made them a more viable alternative. This "Bob" was passed down through a family as was told to me from this gentleman, from his grandfather's grandfather along with a couple of other very old tools that dated from around 1890-1920. Bob, as we shall now call this item was splotched with what I thought at the time was a heavy black paint and on the exposed metal parts, Bob had a fair but even coating of orange make-up "rust". In that condition, no lettering could be seen. I took Bob to his new home and plopped him into a nice bath of mineral spirits to take off the paint. It didn't, but after a week or so it softened it up enough so that using a wooden popsicle stick I was able to scrape/peel it off then Bob got rinsed, dried and plopped into some Evapo-Rust product to remove the rest of his make-up. After a couple of days, (I forgot about him) Bob came out, got a good rinse and nylon toothbrushing, the photo's show how he looked after he got all dried off. Now you know Bob's story. I hope he finds it into a nice collection. Look over the Photos, any questions please ask before buying. Thank you for Looking. I am downsizing so things will be priced to sell! Will be listing parts, hardware, HVAC, electrical, tools, garage items, man cave, steampunk, old vintage bits and pieces, swap meet stuff..... I will combine shipping. Fastest way and to ensure you get the items is to just buy them. I will see they were bought by the same person and I will refund any overages in shipping, usually the same day if not by the next. You can also send me a message to confirm. Look at my Feedback, I have done this many times and I am not going to ruin my rating for a one time grab of a few shipping dollars. I use recycled shipping materials when feasible and I reserve the right to switch shippers to enhance service as I have seen as much as 6 days difference in est delivery dates. If this is an issue, you MUST let me know when you buy the item(s) as there is little I can do after they are on their way. Thank you for looking. Stocking Code: A3 Orange
