Description: A lovely matched pair of framed courtship paintings. Mixed media, oil over gouache on thick, beveled wooden panels. European, probably French. Undated but vintage. Unsigned, however a name/street address appears, in pencil, on the back of the wooden panel, in each. Whether this is the artist or the original owner is unknown. Matching vintage wooden picture frames, with gold-painted composition decoration. Size of the frames is about 6.5" x 8.75" , each. A outdoor courting scene of young lovers, each gazing upon the other across the space between the framed panels. They are well-dressed in fashionable clothing of the late 18th / early 19th century. The young man is wearing a frock coat and cornered hat of the period and with his walking stick tucked under his right arm. He bows and offers a bouquet of flowers to the young woman in the opposite panel. His eyes are fixed steadily upon her. The young woman, in an ankle-length dress and an elaborate hat of the era, holds her fan to her face. Her head is demurely turned slightly away, however her eyes are fixed on the young man - just as steadily as his eyes are upon her. The continuous background is a green landscape of trees and flowers. At the rear of the young woman's panel is an upright marble pillar & carved stone urn, around which is wrapped a symbolically flowering vine. Blossoming love.
