Description: VINTAGE PHOTO VIETNAM: IST AIR CAV DIV, OPERATIONAL MAP 7TH CAV, IA DRANG VALLEY U.S. Army photograph This famed division was first formed in 1923 by combining the West and Southwest cavalry units. With the approach of WWII, it was inevitable that the Horse Cavalry would be replaced by trucks and tanks. The transformation took place in 1941and the 1st Cav’s record in the Pacific and later in Korea, were outstanding. The power of military aviation had become obvious to a group of select officers in the Army such as LTG Howze and BG Harry Kinnard who saw that the helicopter would give the Army the shock power needed in the future. With the election of John F. Kennedy, Robert McNamara took over as Defense Secretary and jammed through the concept of airmobility. McNamara gave Howze and Kinnard whatever they needed. By 1965, the division now called the 1st Cavalry Division Airmobile, was in Vietnam. With 16,000 troops and 400 aircraft, the Division was by far the most powerful and flexible in the world demonstrating its tenacity at the Ia Drang Valley, Bong Son, Quang tri and Tet.
