Description: From the artist- “KimmBerly Ioane Studios is located at the western base of the Superstition Mountains in Arizona. This area creates an open-air atmosphere that easily connects me to Mother Earth, or “mother to all clay”.” “My Raku pottery is bold with a strong sense of design, color, and passion. The shapes I create range from large upright vessels to wide-mouthed vases, to mixed-media wall pieces, and freeform sculptures. I contrast bright colors with deep bronzes and light white crackle glazes. Multiple processes of drawing, painting, stamping, hand-throwing, slab making, and firing are incorporated to produce the result. My guiding idea for each piece starts with a robust structural clay body, a form that can stand on its own. At this point I already have the finished design in mind, however, I make changes as they come to me. Each piece is shaped to create an original personality and depth.” Raku pottery is a captivating art form that comes from Japan, mirroring the Japanese traditions with modern creativity. Each Raku piece is a masterpiece in its own right. Raku firing really is one of the most natural techniques that you can encounter in pottery. In raku firing, all of nature's elements are used, earth, fire, air, and water. The earth is used to make the pot, then it's put into a reduction chamber kiln, then plunged into water. The cold water halts the firing process. A lovely fact about raku pottery is that its name literally translates as 'happiness in the accident'. The pottery boasts vibrant hues and mesmerizing glazes that leave a metallic effect eith different hues depending on the chemicals or glazes that are used on the piece. Artisans know that each time they make a Raku pottery, the end result will always be different from the last. Although it may appear to just be a roll of the dice, these pieces are born from the hands of truly skilled artisans like Kimmberly Ioane. She seems to juggle the art of spontaneity and individuality with precision effortlessly. Since the firing process is always unpredictable she relies heavily on the skilled techniques she honed over the years to create masterful works. Her Raku has the ability of telling a story about its origin through intricate patterns and textures. Owning a Kimmberly Ioane piece is like owning a masterpiece in the Raku world. Its tactile charm invites touch, creating a palpable symphony that enchants both the eyes and the fingertips. Each Raku creation by Kimmberly is engaging, making it a great conversation piece to be added to any collection.
