Description: Vintage Tether Cars - 1948 AMRCA Nationals- L.I.A.R.S. Club - Luning Bros. Black & white COPIES of photos & articles from national publications (Rail & Cable News – Model Craftsman – Model Race Car) and local New York newspapers from the personal scrapbooks of Fred and Frank Lunning, who were members of the Long Island Auto Racing Society (LIARS) club......Frank, the older brother was one of the first to race at the 1939 NY World’s Fair. Fred, a machinist by trade, worked at Grumman aircraft, as did noted custom car builder Wilber Martin during the war years, using scraps of some very “exotic” materials, Fred made his own tools and jigs, used to hop up his Dooling .61 engines. (rings, rods, ported and polished pistons, rotary valves, cylinder liners and milled heads). Fred’s racing carrier is well documented in both AMRCA and IMRCA events with his home-built teardrop car with Dooling engine. Holder of the 1948 clubs track record, the 1947 Eastern Regional Speed Record, the Model Craftsman 5th Annual “Harold V. Loose Memorial” race, the East Coast Championship and the AMRCA 1946 World Speed Record of 113.20mph to name a few. Club members shirt, jacket patch. and hat . The LIARS track was located in East Meadows and was built in 1941. The property belonged to Stanly Basara and the track was conveniently located behind his “Light House Tavern”. (bar) The tavern was also used for club meetings and members special occasions. The tavern was decorated with old “Obsolete” tether cars. Stanley’s 10-year-old daughter, Margie was also very active in the clubs racing events. A second track had to be built to accommodate the many racers that attended the 1948 AMRCA NATIONALS on Aug 13th – 15th..... The 1948 membership roaster showed racers from all over the NY area (Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, Nassau and the patio field of Suffolk counties) By 1951, like so many other clubs’ tracks, the racing came to an end, mostly due to the noise level, the value of open land, the members having found other interests (Freeport Stadium midget and stock car racing, and Roosevelt Raceway etc.) A developer purchased the land where the tracks were , and the tavern became Mario’s Italian Restaurant....... In 1984 at the Nationals held in Pa. , a McCoy 60 powered Railton was entered in memory of the " Luning Brothers Racing Team " ....... Bruce Underwood (Yellow Jacket fame) was in attendance and commented “It was nice to be able to actually see a car go around the track again" BEING OFFERED: ( 27 ) pages...
