Description: Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE While attending the U.S. Army Reserve Officer's Training Corps (ROTC) Program at the Pennsylvania State University from 1978 - 1982, I participated in the U.S. Army's Simultaneous Membership Program that started in March 1980. This program allowed individuals to be a part of both the Army Reserve or National Guard and their college's ROTC program. Since I was planning to accept an Active Army assignment upon my graduation from Penn State and being commissioned as a Second Lieutenant, I enlisted into the Army Reserves in March 1980. The Senior ROTC Training Non-Commissioned Officer, SFC Gosnell, who was a Combat Infantryman, gave me this box of Graphic Training Aid (GTA) 44-2-1 Visual Aircraft Recognition Cards to become familiar with the types of aircraft prior to my attendance at the U.S. Army Infantry One Station Unit Training Course at Fort Benning, GA in May 1980. After completing Infantry Basic and Advanced Individual Training (AIT) courses on 28 August 1980, I was assigned to the U.S. Army Reserve's, Company B, 314th Mechanized Infantry Battalion located in Huntingdon, PA on 1 September 1980. I attempted to return these aircraft recognition cards to SFC Gosnell, but he said that I should consider the aircraft recognition cards as a graduation present for not only completing Infantry Basic and AIT but maxing out the Performance Oriented Infantry Qualification Test and graduating the 12-week course with honors. I kept these Aircraft Recognition Cards with my other military GTA’s in my workplace office in a sealed plastic container and after retirement I displayed or stored them in one of our smoke free homes. Since my wife and I relocated from Manassas VA to Fort Myers, FL, I no longer have a space to display or permanently store all my military training material or military service memorabilia. As a result, I am offering these original vintage U.S. Army GTA 44-2-1 Visual Aircraft Recognition Cards - July 1977 for sale on eBay. The front view of the white box containing the U.S. Army GTA 44-2-1 Visual Aircraft Recognition Cards is shown in the first attached high-resolution photograph. The left-hand side of the box contains the following text: “GRAPHIC TRAINING AID”, 44-2-1, Study Cards 1-54. Below this text is a straight horizontal line followed by the following text: “This revised edition includes Change 1 (cards 36 & 38), VISUAL AIRCRAFT RECOGNITION, DISTRUTION: To be distributed to U.S. Army Training Aids Center.” Below this text is another horizontal line then the following text: “HEADQUARTERS, DEPARTMENT OF THE ARMY, JULY 1977” as exhibited in the first photograph. The box’s width is 3 5/8 inches wide and its height is 2 5/8 inches high. Note: This revised card set includes Change 1 (cards 36 & 38) to the previous edition. There are also some minor blemishes on the box from normal classroom and personal study use. The rear view of the white box containing the U.S. Army GTA 44-2-1 Visual Aircraft Recognition Cards Is shown in the second attached high-resolution photograph. There is no text on this side of the box; however, it does contain the flap on the right-hand side that secures the cards within the box. The open flap is shown in the third attached high resolution photograph. Note: There are also some minor blemishes on the box from normal classroom and personal study use. The bottom-side view of the white box containing the U.S. Army GTA 44-2-1 Visual Aircraft Recognition Cards Is shown in the fourth attached high-resolution photograph. The side height of the box is 5/8 of an inch high. The top-side view of the white box containing the U.S. Army GTA 44-2-1 Visual Aircraft Recognition Playing Cards is shown in the fifth attached high-resolution photograph. Each of the 54 cards has a front and rear side containing the aircraft specific nomenclature. For example, the first aircraft is the “G-91 FIAT” listed below the aircraft. The top right corner contains the following text: “GTA 44-2-1 FIG. 1 FRONT”. The middle of the card exhibits a detailed diagram of the aircraft along with the following key characteristics: “1. SWEPTBACK WINGS, 2. INTAKE BENEATH NOSE, 3. SHORT NEEDLE NOSE, 4. BUBBLE COCKPIT” as shown in the sixth attached high-resolution photograph. The card’s width is 3 1/2 inches wide and its height is 2 1/2 inches high. The rear side contains other viewpoints of the aircraft. If the card is held horizontally, the top right corner contains the following text: “GTA 44-2-1 FIG. 1 Back” as shown in the seventh attached high-resolution photograph. If the card is turned vertically, the four silhouettes are exhibited in the center. Below the bottom aircraft silhouette is the following text: “G-91 FIGHTER, WINGSPAN 9 m, FIAT, ITALY, LENGTH 10 m” as shown in the eighth attached high-resolution photograph. The other 53 cards have the exact same format. The 54 aircraft recognition cards are exhibited in the ninth attached high-resolution photograph. Exhibited are five piles of 10 cards on the left-hand side and one pile of 4 cards on the right-hand side. As exhibited in the previous photographs, both the original U.S. Army GTA 44-2-1 Visual Aircraft Recognition box and cards are in excellent condition. Although this training aid contains a water-resistant covering to protect it from the elements, these cards were only used indoors and never taken outside. This item would be a great addition for any novice or professional military collector. Note: Photographs are an important part of my description; please review all photographs before purchasing. If my photographs and or description are lacking something of importance, please ask questions prior to purchasing. Thanks!
