Description: Joseph Austen & Son Pewter Irish Haystack Noggin (Measuring) Pitcher It is 6” tall and 3 ½” in diameter / 5” wide including the handle. It is marked on bottom with a circular “& SON COR” and has a lion on a crown, under that. Unfortunately the impression of the rest of the mark is not prominent. The Lion on the crown was indeed a trademark of the Austen & Son Cork – Cork Ireland Pewter Company. This piece is in remarkable condition with only a couple of dents in the body opposite the handle. Please see photos. Located History: “Joseph Austen was the first to make this type of measure in approximately 1790. He moved to North Main Street, Cork, with his son and produced the haystack or harvester from a gallon to a half gill size. Pewter Measures Originated in Ireland early 19th Century and were known as a “Haystack” or “Harvester” measure. By an act in 1907 it was made necessary for all measures to empty when tilted to an angle of 120 degrees, thus many earlier styles in measures are rare having been destroyed when submitted to Inspectors for verification.” Based on research, it seems that there were lots of haystack reproductions made, so I do not know the exact age of this item, or if it is original or reproduction. Please see photos and judge for yourself.
