This book is perfect for anyone who loves to explore history and art. This Amazon review explains the book completely! This is a lovely book which came into being in a most unusual way: Theodore H. Kapnek states in the Foreword of the book that he began collecting samplers with his purchase of 3 English samplers around 1966 (he says it was "about 12 years ago" prior to the publishing of the book, the first edition being in 1978). He was hooked. About 5 years after that, he sold his British samplers to focus on American. It sounds like it was his avocation to collect all these works because he was counseled and encouraged by the author and is indebted to Doris Ashley of the Philadelphia Museum of Art how to restore and preserve antique samplers. There are almost 100 samplers displayed in about 124 plates (there may be several showing full-size and details of the same sampler) and roughly about 2/3 of the plates are in color. In recent years there has been an explosion of research on school girl embroideries, thus making them quite rare to find in antique stores or garage sales because people are sophisticated as to their value. Mr. Kapnek found the niche soon enough before this that he was able to enlarge his collection for far less than his samplers are worth. This is to our great gain because of the help of the experts named above who were able to do the legwork and research both the samplers and the their makers. Every sampler is described and discussed in detail, pictured, and its maker is identified as often as possible with an entire appendix on genealogy.Publisher : Plume; First Edition (October 27, 1978)Language : EnglishPaperback : 96 pagesISBN-10 : 052547515XISBN-13 : 978-0525475156Item Weight : 8 ouncesDimensions : 7 x 1 x 5 inchesOUT OF PRINTɞ~ʚїɞ~ʚїɞ~ʚїɞ~ʚїɞ~ʚїɞ~ʚїɞ~ʚїɞ~ʚїɞ~ʚїɞ~ʚїɞ~ʚїɞ~ʚїɞ~ʚїɞ~~ʚїɞ~ʚїɞ~ʚїɞSMOKE FREE HOME Check out my store for other treasures I combine shipping on all my listings when possible ,please ask for an invoice and shipping can be easily combinedIn my small efforts for a greener world I reuse shipping supplies, and recycle cardboard cereal boxes etc. Thanks so much for your and helping my small business PLEASE READ; Free returns are offered to you should I ship the wrong item, if the item was received by you damaged or if the description of such item is in gross error.
