Born in East Orange, New Jersey to Adelaide Sparkman and Joseph Russell Lynes (died 1932). His younger brother was Joseph Russell Lynes, Jr. (1910–1991). Lynes spent his childhood in New Jersey but attended the Berkshire School in Massachusetts, where he was a classmate of Lincoln Kirstein (1907–1996). He was sent to Paris in 1925 with the idea of better preparing him for college. His life was forever changed by the circle of friends that he would meet there including Gertrude Stein, Glenway Wescott, Monroe Wheeler. He attended Yale University in 1926, but dropped out after a year to move to New York City ... " Indiana University " ... The photos were considered taboo at the time, and transferring them by mail could result in jail time or a fine. But Lynes was not only daring with his gift, he was hopeful that one day photos of nude men, some of whom are posing together, would not only be allowed to be seen but would be seen without prejudice or fear of prosecution ... " Howard Greenberg Gallery " ... By 1933, Lynes was a central figure in the New York photography world. He quickly became known for his highly stylized images characterized by expressionistic lighting, surrealistic props, and suggestive settings. He was soon receiving commissions from Harper's Bazaar, Town & Country, and Vogue. In 1935 he was asked to document the principal dancers and productions of Lincoln Kirstein's and George Balanchine's newly founded American Ballet company (now the New York City Ballet) ... " Musée " ... While not dogged by persecution in the way of, say, Caravaggio, George Platt Lynes was a trailblazing mid-Century fashion and fine art photographer compelled to partially conceal during his lifetime a large, artistically significant portion of his oeuvre. Living an outsized, colorful life, his seems to have been, rather than direct institutional repression, a case of preemptive self-censure: he was careful to not publish his private studio work during his lifetime, at least not under his own name ... A two-color halftone produced by overprinting two halftone screens made from the same photograph (usually a black-and-white photograph), as a means of generating a monochromatic image with a full range of tonal gradations. In the creation of a duotone, two halftone plates are made, one for black, which picks up the highlight and shadow regions, and one for middle tones, either other shades of black, or another color. When two non-black colors are used in the production of a duotone, it is often called a duochrome. Duotones are often made to increase detail in the black regions of an image, or as a special effect ... "Lithography Process (Tate) " ... Offset lithography involves printing the image onto an intermediate surface before the final sheet. The process is ‘offset’ because the plate does not come in direct contact with the paper, which preserves the quality of the plate. With offset lithography, the image is reversed twice, and appears on the final sheet the same way round as on the stone or plate ...
