Description: Offering an original vintage photographic print by famed Cape Cod photographer John W. Gregory (1903-1992). Silver gelatin print, matted and framed under glass. Photo is titled “Provincetown Fishermen,” with title and photographer signature in pencil on matte. Very good condition, in original frame. (Backing paper has small rips.) Frame measures 17 1/4 in. x 21 1/4 in., matted image measures 10 in. x 13 1/4 in. (Owner believes that the photograph was acquired on the Cape in the 1950s.) Born in New York City in 1903, John W. Gregory studied at the Art Students League in New York. He took up photography during World War II in Provincetown (Massachusetts). His photographs were published by Time Magazine, the New York Times, and the Associated Press. Seven of his photographs are included in the permanent collection of the Smithsonian National Museum of American History, including a variant of this photograph (titled “Provincetown Fishing Dragger”). The Smithsonian considers John W. Gregory one of America’s finest pictorial photographers. His photos capture the stark beauty of the Outer Cape from the haunting limbs of dead tree branches in the sand to “old salts” conversing as their boats sit behind them in the harbor, as depicted in this photograph. His landscapes and portraits were done in rich black and white tones. Will consider a reasonable offer. Ships with FedEx Ground.
