Description: VTG Mexican Feather Craft Framed Bird Art 3.5x5.5” In 5x7” Frame. The work is quite old, perhaps crafted in the 1950s. The frame itself needs replacing, looks to be old bamboo and his held together by 4 tiny nails and some, you guessed it, duct tape. The back of the work itself is stamped “Made in Mexico.” The bird comprised of a variety of feathers is intact and quite lovely. There is no damage to the work itself but the flimsy paper “mat” should also be replaced. This type of art was very popular among tourists in the 1950s-60s. Feather crafting stems from the Aztec handicraft called “Plumeria” (feather working) of making masks, headdresses and embellishing textiles to be worn by deserving warriors and leaders. The killing of birds for their plumage is no longer deemed acceptable and the practice has been halted. Meanwhile we have this beautiful little bird that deserves a nice place to hang.
