Description: This beautiful beaded-edge, oval serving piece has three separate pieces—the oval dish, a well-fitted cover, & the lid’s handle which can be removed for cleaning or to use the lid as a separate open dish. There are some markings stamped on the bottom. It reads ”H W Ltd within a small shield, followed by an oval with a modified rectangular shape surrounding an “equals” sign, and then the “EPNS” mark for electroplated nickel silver. My research identified that makers mark was used by Henry Wilkinson & Co. in Sheffield, 1872-1894. My further search of British silver plate marks, showed a buyout by Walker & Hall in1894 & a consolidation of that company with Mappin & Webb, Elkins & Co. to form British Silverware Ltd. which dissolved in 1971. What appears to be the exact dish on another popular online selling site is listed as “Mappin & Webb’s Prince’s Plate English Sheffield Silver Plated Covered Dish” with Mappin & Webb markings. I’m not an expert, but it seems that this piece was made prior to the buyout/consolidation of H W Ltd. of Sheffield & the pattern continued to be made under other names in the consolidation. Please look carefully at the photos which show the surfaces of the dish. Thanks for checking this listing & if you have questions or need additional photos to help make a decision on purchasing, just message me. Also, please share any knowledge about the history of this dish in a message so I can include it in the listing.
