Date: April 22, 1998 Artist: Walt Disney Feature Animation Description: The groundbreaking for the new construction began on March 6, 1997 in the midst of the most aggressive production schedule ever mounted by Disney Animation. The plans were inspired by Disney's Burbank campus, as designed by Kem Weber. For this new project at WDW, Weber's original Burbank plans were used as reference for an updated design reportedly created by architect Richard Graham (unconfirmed). In just over one year, the Walt Disney World animation team was able to occupy the new structure, leaving a smaller group of animators working in the Animation attraction at Disney MGM. While the animation initiative actually began with the opening of the Disney MGM Studios in 1989, production demands on the Florida team quickly began to outpace the capacity of the start-up operation. Amazingly, while the new building was opened "on time" in 1998, within six years production had ground to a halt and the entire Florida animation studio effort was terminated by 2004. The new structure would be repurposed as corporate office spaces for the Walt Disney World Resort and few traces now remain of the once elaborate animation production facility.
