Colonial landmarks in Portland include the childhood home (1785) of the poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, The Portland Head Light (1791), one of the oldest lighthouses in the United States, is located in nearby Cape Elizabeth. It was also a major port for building ships and organizing troops for transatlantic travel during WWI and WWII. Walter Paris (1842 - 1906) was active/lived in District Of Columbia, California. Walter Paris is known for Landscape, coastal-town views.Watercolorist and Architect. Born in London, England in 1842. Paris was a resident of Colorado Springs, CO before visiting the Monterey Peninsula during 1875-76. While there, he shared a studio with his good friend Jules Tavernier. He was an architect with the British government in India during 1886-90 and was again in Colorado in 1891. He became a citizen of the U.S. in 1894 and spent his remaining years in New York and Washington, DC where he died on Nov. 26, 1906. Member: Tile Club (co-founder).
