Description: Original engraving by John Sartain of WWalter Savage Landor Sartain (1808-1897) was an English born American artist who pioneered mezzotint engraving in the US. Consider the best engraver of his time. Engraving is over 150 years old. Made around 1850’s Landor was an English writer, poet, and activist. His best known works were the prose Imaginary Conversations, and the poem "Rose Aylmer," but the critical acclaim he received from contemporary poets and reviewers was not matched by public popularity. As remarkable as his work was, it was equalled by his rumbustious character and lively temperament. Both his writing and political activism, such as his support for Lajos Kossuth and Giuseppe Garibaldi, were imbued with his passion for liberal and republican causes.[1] He befriended and influenced the next generation of literary reformers such as Charles Dickens and Robert Browning Condition: no foxing but a water stain bottom right edge but wont be seen with mat see photos. The actual picture is beautiful. looks really good with an acid free mat and black frame it would look wonderful . Pretty good considering its age excellent example of Sartain work. Size: large 12 inches by 9 1/2 inches actual engraving , picture without writing 5 5/8 by 4 5/8 approximately If you google John Sartain you will see many collections have this engraving. The library of Congress sells photos of this engraving. Made for Electic Magazine but note this engraving unlike others does not say made for the eclectic magazine. Just says engraved by Sartain and his name. Other engravings are smaller on eBay from either being cut or out of a small book. This is not a copy but an original engraving. Great piece of history. We got these while we were living in Philadelphia. Bought at an antique store and always thought we would open a store to sell prints but now retired so just selling. Have over 200 engravings. Have sat in a box for over 30 years.
