You are bidding on a 2 volume set of War & Peace by Leo Tolstoy, translation from the Russian by Louise & Aylmer Maude, revised and introduced by the Maudes and illustrated with reproductions of the famous 19th century paintings by Vassily Verestchagin and drawings by Fritz Eichenberg. The Heritage Press, New York published the book special contents copyright 1938. It is Bussacco Heritage Press catalog number BHP- G-7-1 & 2. Both volumes were issued December 1943. The set was designed by George Macy. This is a George Macy first edition. In 1938, the Limited Editions Club issued the book in 6 volumes, with illustrations by Barnett Freedman. Volume 1, Signed by Fritz Eichenberg: The interior is in fine condition. The pages are tight and clean. There are no tears. There is a gift Inscription signed by Fritz Eichenberg on the half title page. The cover is in fine condition. The slipcase is in good condition. The bottom edge of the right side is split front to back, and uneven fading and the bottom left edge is split 4 3/4" starting at the front. I would secure the bottom edges with a small piece of tape. The slipcase should continue to protect the book for decades to come. The book is 5” x 7 5/8” tall and 811 pages. There are 8 b & w double spread drawings by Fritz Eichenberg. Volume 2: The interior is in fine condition. The pages are tight and clean. There are no marks or tears. There are no signs of prior ownership. The cover is in fine condition. There is slight fading of the spine. The slipcase is in good condition. There is wear, and uneven fading. The book is 5” x 7 5/8” tall and 857 pages. There are 9 double spread color reproduction of paintings by Vassily Verestchagin and several b & w drawings by Fritz Eichenberg. Laid in the front The Heritage Club Sandglass No. 7 GRS.
