The USS Louisville (CA-28) was a United States Navy Northampton-class heavy cruiser that served during World War II. The Northampton-class cruisers were designed and built in the 1920s and 1930s as part of the U.S. Navy's efforts to modernize its fleet. The Louisville was the fourth ship to be named after the city of Louisville, Kentucky. Here are some key points about the USS Louisville (CA-28): Construction and Commissioning: The USS Louisville was constructed at the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard in Bremerton, Washington. She was launched on September 1, 1930, and commissioned into service on January 15, 1931. Specifications: The Louisville had a length of approximately 600 feet and displaced around 9,050 tons. The ship was armed with nine 8-inch/55 caliber guns in three triple turrets, along with several anti-aircraft and anti-submarine weapons. Pre-World War II Service: During the interwar years, the Louisville participated in various fleet exercises and training operations in the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. The cruiser also made goodwill visits to different ports around the world. World War II Service: When the United States entered World War II following the attack on Pearl Harbor in December 1941, the USS Louisville became actively involved in combat operations. She participated in numerous campaigns in the Pacific Theater, including the Battle of Guadalcanal, the Battle of the Santa Cruz Islands, the Battle of Leyte Gulf, and the Battle of Okinawa. Sinking of the USS Louisville: On January 6, 1945, during the Battle of Lingayen Gulf, the Louisville was hit by a kamikaze aircraft, causing significant damage and casualties. The ship was temporarily repaired and then sailed to the United States for further repairs. Due to the extensive damage and the ongoing progress of the war, the decision was made not to restore the ship to active duty. Decommissioning: The USS Louisville was decommissioned on April 17, 1946, and was struck from the Naval Vessel Register on July 1, 1959. Fate: After being decommissioned, the Louisville was sold for scrap on November 9, 1959, and subsequently dismantled. It's important to note that historical information may be updated or revised over time as new research and discoveries are made. Nevertheless, the USS Louisville played a significant role in the United States Navy's efforts during World War II and contributed to the Allied victory in the Pacific.
