HISTORY/MARKS: This is frequently referred to as WDCO. Frank Herman Thurm was born in March 1869 in Dresden, Germany grown up & working in the glass and pottery region. In 1893 at the age of 24, he moved to Wheeling, West Virginia. Apparently, he started his decorating studio in the early 1900’s. In 1904, he moved his venture to Market & 7th Street in an old brewery building that became its home for 58 years. Originally, the studio hand painted glass, china and pottery. Karl Knoblich, born in 1886 and died in 1948, worked for WDCO from 1911-1948 as a foreman, designer and artist. He was primarily responsible for the encrusted gold process. The 1911-1947 years were considered the growth years for the business. The company purchased "blanks" from about 300 different manufacturers including Fenton (WV), Tiffin (OH), Heisey, Cambridge and Hall (OH). The interesting information we learned concerning the Wheeling Decorating Company came from a beautifully detailed guide called Wheeling Decorating Co.: Identification & Value Guide by James L. Webster. On the bottom of both pieces, the encrusted gold mark TM-G was used before 1925 to 1941. Please view all pictures carefully as they are part of the description.
