Description: The Webster's and Skinners 1817 12 mo/Duo decimo, "School Bible" that we are offering for sale, was listed in Hill's catalog as the FIRST B&J Collins stereotyped 12mo.Bible.(#331) She did not say it was the FIRST, she did however list it first. This Webster Skinners 1817/18 was Collins SECOND stereotype.(IT IS NOT A BIBLE TYPICALLY EASY TO FIND) We know the FIRST Collins 12mo stereotype was T.W. White's 1817. We also know this because we used to OWN that Bible, and it has recently found its happy and proper home at the Tennessee Bible Museum! Also, it is not common knowledge among most Bible collectors that the Isaiah Thomas/W. Greenough "Standing Type" Bible served as the direct form for the FIRST B&J Collins stereotype 12mo, after a few modifications of the second column throughout the Bible.... both have 792 pages. Collins and Greenough literally went through and opened the casing, replacing Long S letters with Short S letters, Page by page, to make the stereotype forms. It's one of the reasons Greenough never printed in 1818! It took quite a task to reassemble the entire standing type back to its original form. ***The B&J Collins stereotype 12 MO was used by many different printers after THIS BIBLE! B&J Collins was the FIRST historically successful early American stereotype founders*** This Bible overall is in good to very good condition due to the condition of the binding and very straight text block! It does have a few shortcomings, a tatty General title, some common dog ears, and common tanning with age. Overall not a great deal of foxing, photo show it does not have blank pages at the front...but it does contain both at the back. It is the first Albany New York printed "School Bible". It is a nice piece of printing history, and for the beginning Bible collector, especially if early American Bibles, this is a nice Bible to acquire at a reasonable price! Happy bidding!
