With Mobile Fidelity, you will come as close as possible to hearing the three-dimension quality of the music just as the artist intended it to be. Stop and think that this was Wes' first outing at Verve, and also his first meeting with journeyman arrnger/conductor Don Sebesky (and Don's fine work over the years with just about anyone you can think of in the jazz business) and this album isn't a "sellout" as so many "jazz purists" called anything a solo artist on any instrument ever did with strings. (They started that with "Bird" when they bumrapped Charlie Parker for his strings albums in the 50's, go figure) The irony here is that Montgomery first sought out Sebesky and record producer Creed Taylor and asked them what THEY thought they should embark on. Ever the modest one, Montgomery was thrilled to do this album, only to become "rigid" during initial recording sessions, fearing he wasn't good enough to be in the studio with the orchestral greats in the band. Sebesky came up with the ingenious plan of recording the main tracks with Montgomery and the rhythm section ONLY, then came back and re-did all the charts around what they had in the can. The payoff is more than evident in the spectacular reading of the Broadway hit song "A QUIET THING", which comes off as a smoldering bit of beauty in the able hands of Wes, framed by a shimmering string chart courtesy of Sebesky. Two other well known tracks shine on this album, the bossa-nova feel of the Webster/Mandel penned evergreen THE SHADOW OF YOUR SMILE and the Burke/Van Heusen classic HERE'S THAT RAINY DAY. Not to be missed are the originals by Montgomery either, especially the opener and title track, BUMPIN'. Bonus tracks include a song written by Sebesky, MUSTY and a great reading of the old chestnut MY ONE AND ONLY LOVE, a particularly tough song to convey vocally or instrumentally. Many have tried, Wes succeeds sublimely. So what if it's jazz with strings...some of the best jazz albums are made that way, in my opinion. It may not be pure jazz, per se, but it's one of the music's finest interpreters, backed by a super group and a fine arranger / conductor in Sebesky (who also teamed up with Wes for the pop-influenced CALIFORNIA DREAMING album later on at Verve) An excellent issue. 1. Bumpin' 2. Tear It Down 3. A Quiet Thing 4. Con Alma 5. The Shadow of Your Smile 6. Mi Cosa 7. Here's That Rainy Day 8. Musty DCC GOING OUT OF MY HEAD - All have Limited Edition numbers -- only 5,000 were pressed of this collector’s item. This LP is a piece of musical audiophile history and is the only Analogue Mastered Pressing of this title. Most DCC Steve Hoffman mastered titles are now selling for at least $350. So don't miss out Would make a great ‘GIFT’ for any jazz/Wes Montgomery fan. One of the greatest guitarists in the history of Jazz. This 1965 Verve release includes the hit - Going Out Of My Head plus great treatments of Golden Earrings - End Of A Love Affair - It Was A Very Good Year and more. This album is an orchestrated one. The director (if my memory is not going wrong) was no less than Nelson Riddle the best "easy Jazz orchestra" director of them all! He surrounded Wes with very balanced arrangements, powerful in some points and tender in other points. A perfect velvet background for Wes's fantastic solos. Wes blows here exactly like he did in the Riverside hard bop albums simply the enviroment is richer. This is not an A&M record and Nelson Riddle is a way better director than Don Sebesky (A&M choice for director chair in Wes's albums). A&M records were commercial, radio albums. This is a Jazz album with fantastic arrangements! Big difference! Wes begins here without any hurry. The title track is pure winning sixties soul jazz. What a tone Wes had! Unbelievable! So big, so warm so surrounding! He was unreachable! Jim Hall once joked that one day in the sixties he "thought to close Wes's thumb in a car's door" ... just to tribute his talent. He was SO big!! Then the album's program goes on with some popular tunes. On some of them Wes outplay every cat in the biz. For real. Listen to what he did to "Chim Chim Cheere". Unbelievable! He transformed a simple childish tune in a Jazz anthem! Faaaaaaaantastic! Phenomenal! And a big applause to Oliver Nelson too! Then you have a couple of Wes's best originals, "Naptown blues" and "Twisted blues" and in the end some superlative standards interpretations.
