Description: Wharton, Edith. The House of Mirth. 8vo red ribbed cloth, gilt, TEG. Illustrated by A. B. Wenzel. NY: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1905.First edition, second printing, often erroneously described as second state. According to some sources, there were 23,000 copies printed; divided between two different binders, hence the difference in so-called states. However, in the first state, conjugate pages 535-538 are blank. In the second “state,” rather printing, four pages of ads have been printed on these pages featuring Wharton’s earlier works. That is, the ads were not inserted during binding, but printed on the blank pages, possibly of existing sheets, before binding. Clearly, the binders received different sets of sheets. Nevertheless, a landmark in Modern American Fiction. Bookplate of the late Gilbert McCoy Troxell, formerly the American Literature curator at Yale Library. A much read copy. Spine somewhat faded and creased, binding slightly cocked, still, better than it sounds. A solid good to very good copy.
