Description: Smithsonite Kelly Mine, Magdalena Mining District, Socorro County, New Mexico ~2.5 x 4 x 4 cm, 39.3 grams This is a vug of glossy white smithsonite from one of the world's most renowned localities for smithsonite. There is some attached limonitic matrix, and you can see just how the smithsonite was filling leached, gossan vugs and cavities within the host rock - the bottom of the specimen looks texturally almost like an amygdaloidal basalt, but it's heavily mineralized and silicified limestone. The entire botryoidal surface inside the vug has the pearlescent sheen well-prepped Kelly specimens are known for. Ex. Steve Hardinger / Dragon Minerals. About the deposit: The Kelly mine is a former lode Zn-Pb-Cu-Ag-Au mine located 5.1 km SE of Magdalena, near the headwaters of Kelly Gulch. The mine was discovered and first produced in 1878. It closed to commercial ore mining in 1957. Mineralization is hosted in the Kelly Limestone of the Magdalena Group (359-331 Ma). Ore emplacement occurred when hydrothermal activity / mineralized solutions rose along fractures and replaced favorable host rock, circa 29-26 Ma.
