Grows best in well-drained, sandy-loamy soil with lots of decaying forest wood and compost. Soil pH target is 5.5 to 6.5. USDA growing zone of origin is 8 and may also thrive in adjacent zones. Wild, natural, thorned variety which produces abundant fruit starting in the second year, with peak harvest Time during the month of June in Southeastern USA. Dry pack planting instructions : (1) scarify by soaking in hot tap water for 24 hours and then stratifying under refrigeration for 3 months or more (alternatively, purchase our pre-stratified seed package) (2) surface sow direct on soil or in pots and lightly tamp. Requires sunlight to germinate. Prefers partial shade / filter light in first year (recommended to grow in pots first year). If starting in pots transplant into soil in late winter/early spring.
