Description: Printer to the Poet Author: Bentley, Wilder Title: Printer to the Poet Publication: Berkeley, CA: The Archetype Press, 1937 Description: Bentley, Wilder, The Printer to the PoetBerkeley, CA: The Archetype Press, 1937String-tied, attractive scrap printed wrappers, 10" x 6.5", 7 pp. A few ink spots and light soiling to wrappers, a touch toned, still better than very good. One of 350 copies of Wilder Bentley's "Number Two" of "The Archetype Press Chapbooks," hand printed by himself and his wife in 1937. In the book Bentley opined that "the printer's obligation to the poet is an esthetic one. That is why so few printers suffer from any sense of obligation whatsoever. Poetry is admittedly the Cinderella of the graphic arts, since the attitude of most professional & job printers toward the printing of verse is one of contempt, not only for the material to be printed, but also for the author of it."Harvey Wilder Bentley (aka Wilder Bentley the Elder, 1900-1982) was a poet, printer, painter, graphic artist and professor of English at San Francisco State College. He is perhaps best known as the proprietor of the Archetype Press, known for publishing (among much else) Ansel Adams' first book of photographs in 1938.A colophon informed that "This chapbook is a reprint of a radio broadcast, University of California Radio Service, 'Lifelong Learning,' San Francisco, January 30th, 1935" and that "George Fields, Bookseller" in San Francisco was "named distributor" of the book "since he first encouraged its publication."A lovely small press edition by a noted printer and artist.
