William Barr (1867-1933) - Oil Painting - 19th Century Coastal Scene

Description: William Barr (Scottish/American, 1867–1933)This late 19th century oil painting on canvas by William Barr measures 12” x 16” or in the contemporary gilded frame dimensions of 15-1/2” x 19-1/2” and is signed lower left, W. Barr. William Barr was born in Paisley, Scotland, a town just outside of Glasgow. In 1915, he moved to California and painted there until his death in 1933. This painting is one that he did while he still lived in Scotland, and is probably of somewhere off the Scottish coast. The painting is in good condition with no defects or anything that distracts when viewing, but could use a good cleaning. Barr known for his en plein air landscape and coastal paintings, makes this Impressionist painting of a small fishing boat sailing back to a Scottish coastal village, a quintessential example of his work. ***Please Note: the last two photos in the gallery are examples of previous sales for William Barr.***Biography:William Barr, born on 26 April 1867 in Glasgow, Scotland, began his art studies as a student at the Paisley School of Art and Design where he earned art teachers and art masters’ certificates. He furthered his studies at the Glasgow School of Art from 1895 to 1898, the South Kensington School of Art in London and then the Académie Julian in Paris in 1904.Upon his return to Scotland, Barr took a teaching position at the Paisley School of Art, where he would teach there for ten years. He married to Elizabeth Stevenson Smith, and they had two children together, Margaret and Ann. In 1912, he visited California for the first time and decided to move there permanently in 1915 after attending the Panama-Pacific International Exposition in San Francisco. Barr made the move to San Francisco as a fulltime artist, primarily painting Californian landscapes, but he also produced portraits and figure studies, still life, architectural studies, and genre scenes, setting up a studio on Lyon Street in San Francisco. William Barr painted mainly en plein air, he moved between Impressionism in his still life works, to Realism and a somber Tonalism styles in his landscape and coastal works. His influence to Tonalism came after his move to California, being that it was prevailing aesthetic in Northern California at the time. William Barr died in San Francisco on February 25, 1933.
