Description: This is a rare custom designed Christmas greeting card sent by Mr. and Mrs. WILLIAM GAXTON during the 1934 holiday season. The card illustrates the lyrics to the hit song "YOU'RE THE TOP" from the Original Broadway production of the COLE PORTER, GUY BOLTON and P. G. WODEHOUSE musical comedy "ANYTHING GOES" which played the Alvin Theatre in New York City. (The production opened November 21st, 1934 and ran for 420 performances.) ..... The musical starred ETHEL MERMAN, WILLIAM GAXTON and VICTOR MOORE and featured BETTINA HALL, VIVIAN VANCE ("I Love Lucy!"), GEORGE E. DETAILS: The die-cut Christmas card measures approx. 6 1/4" X 8 1/4" inches (6 1/4" X 16 1/2" when opened) and illustrates inside a few of the lyrics to the song "You're the top! ... You're the Coliseum ... You're the top! ... You're the Louvre Museum ... You're a melody from a symphony by Strauss ... You're a Bendel bonnet ... A Shakespeare sonnet ... You're Mickey Mouse ... You're the Nile ... You're the Tower of Pisa ... You're the smile on the Mona Lisa ... I'm a worthless check, a total wreck, a flop ...But if, baby, I'm the bottom, you're the top". The backside is blank, but has a considerable amount of glue residue from having been mounted against a backing at one time ..... CONDITION: With the exception of glue residue on the backside, a light diagonal crease and heavier folds at the bottom tip, this rare Christmas card is in excellent condition and will make a wonderful addition to the collection of any musical theatre aficionado or historian. This item will be carefully packaged in a protective, carded sleeve and backed by stiff cardboard.
