Description: WILLIAMS, Tennessee. Battle of Angels. Murray, Utah: Pharos, 1945.First edition, first appearance of author’s first full length play. Pharos: Number 1 & 2. Spring, 1945 - $1.50. Note on the play by Margaret Webster - Afterword by Tennessee Williams. ‘Battle of Angels’, Tennessee Williams's first produced play, opened in Boston on Dec. 30, 1940 and closed in two weeks. Seventeen years later it finally came to New York in a vastly altered version, “Orpheus Descending.” It ran for only 68 performances, and in its third incarnation became the Marlon Brando‐Anna Magnani movie, ‘The Fugitive Kind’. The original play became Williams's most neglected piece of theater, a footnote in a great career. Good/Very good in fragile gray printed wrappers and red lettering. Edges are slightly chipped and creased, sunned, and show small closed tears around spine ends. Scuffing to covers and quarter-circle coffee stain on front wrapper; does not affect printed text. Pages show yellowing and light bending around the ends. Williams won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama for A Streetcar Named Desire in 1948 and for ‘Cat on a Hot Tin Roof’, in 1955. 123pp + advertisements. Fun fact on the author: ‘Tennessee’ was a nickname given to Williams by college peers based on his strong southern accent and father's background in Tennessee. Shipped USPS Media Mail.
