Description: A fine impressionist autumn landscape with trees by American artist Wilson Henry Irvine (1869-1936). Irvine was born in Byron, Illinois and took up journalism after high school. He moved to Chicago and acquired a job as manager of the art department of the Chicago Portrait Company and attended classes at the Art Institute of Chicago at night. During this time, he recorded on canvas the rural Illinois of his childhood. He and his wife traveled in Europe throughout Britain and France, and then returned to settle in Old Lyme, CT, where he became associated with Guy Wiggins and Everett Warner as part of the Old Lyme Art Colony. He is best known for his landscapes usually of rolling hills, open meadows and old stone walls. Oil on canvas, signed lower left, title inscribed on verso stretcher, as well as on a Grand Central Art Galleries label “Autumn’s Opal,” and housed in a fine molded giltwood frame.
