Created for collectors, it IS NOT A POSTER or mass produced print on low quality, inexpensive paper. Winslow Homer (1836 – 1910) was considered the most intensely American painter of his time. Best known for his marine subjects, he is considered one of the foremost painters in 19th century America and a preeminent figure in American art. Largely self-taught, Homer began his career working as a commercial illustrator with many popular prints appearing in Harper's Weekly. He subsequently took up oil painting and produced major studio works characterized by the weight and density he exploited from the medium. He also worked extensively in watercolor, creating a fluid and prolific oeuvre, primarily chronicling his working vacations in New England and the tropics. As popular as Homer has remained, it was not until the early 1950's that his work as an illustrator was "rediscovered" on a large scale. These illustrations provide an invaluable insight into Homer's style development and into the social history of the Civil War and postwar eras. The warmth and charm with which he interpreted the American experience has enchanted generation after generation.
