He trained as anarchitect from 1942 to 1949, a time of political turmoil which generated hisphilosophy toward life and architecture. Libertarian socialism was theunderlying force for his planning and design. De Carlo saw architecture as aconsensus-based activity. His designs are generated as an expression of theforces that operate in a given context including human, physical, cultural, andhistorical forces. He was one of the founding members of Team X, a group of architects challenging the modernist doctrines as set out by CIAM (theInternational Congresses of Modern Architecture organized by Le Corbusier in1928).
