Description: Original WW1 era (1908) British War Office map which was once part of the private collection of ALAN GRANT OGILVIE (see below for further details). Despite being identified as part of the 1:250,000 TURKEY series, it bears the title "THE BALKANS - MT. ATHOS" and actually covers a large area of GREECE. It's one of five maps of "THE BALKANS" which I'm listing from this period that belonged to OGILVIE. The others are all dated 1916, and all five are stamped "A.G.OGILVIE" in the top margin. Professor ALAN GRANT OGILVIE was an eminent geographer whose service with the Royal Field Artillery in WW1 led him to transfer to the Royal Engineers for the purpose of mapping the Dardanelles and the Macedonian Front etc. His military service in Salonika, France and the Dardanelles saw him mentioned in dispatches, and in 1919 he attended the Paris Peace Conference representing the British delegation in respect to international boundary settlements. Following WW1 he resumed his academic career, rising to head Edinburgh University's Geography Department, still finding time to become a Captain in the Home Guard during WW2. The map is in good condition for its age with some evidence of excess margin trimming, but no loss to the original content. Will be shipped as per its existing fold lines. Please see my other WW2 (and WW1) maps, documents, photos etc. PLEASE NOTE - Following BREXIT, items exported from the UK to EU countries now incur import tariffs.
