Description: I have just managed to source a dozen more WW1 French maps which all relate to the very beginning of the war. At this time, it seems that (like the British) the French were not prepared for war in terms of mapping as many of the maps are printed from survey maps dating to around the turn of the century, with some having slightly later revisions. Only as the months progressed and the war became more 'entrenched' did the Allies mapping services kick into gear. This map (an 1896 revision of a 'Type 1889'), entitled "LONS LE SAUNIER" would have been used by troops stationed in the South navigating their way to the Southern tip of the Western Front during the first few months of the war. As LONS LE SAUNIER is close to the Swiss border, I presume there would still have been a military presence retained in this area (despite Switzerland's neutrality) in anticipation of a possible German outflanking manoeuvre. The map is in good condition. (see photos)Measures 54cm x 34cm.Will be shipped as per its existing fold lines. PLEASE NOTE - Following BREXIT, some items exported from the UK to EU countries may now incur import tariffs on arrival. This depends on the overall value of the item (or items) contained within the package. UK sellers are now required to display these details in the form of a Customs Declaration attached to the outside of the package. Such matters are beyond my control as the process is administered by the Customs Department of the destination country. With this in mind, please can all buyers from EU countries make themselves aware of how these changes may affect them when purchasing items from the UK. Thank you in advance for your patience and understanding.
