Description: Original WW2 German "HEERESKARTE" (Army Map) of SPAIN entitled "TOLEDO". It's headed "Nur für den Dienstgebrauch" (equivalent to a "RESTRICTED" British military map). Printed in February 1944. Relations between Spain and Germany were awkward throughout WW2. Franco owed a debt of gratitude to the Axis Powers for their support during the Spanish Civil War, but he never fully came out on their side, leaving Germany concerned about the possibility of Allied landings on the Iberian Peninsula. Germany had also hoped for an incursion into Spain to attack Gibraltar, but Franco's dependence on US imports prevented the plan. The map was most likely captured by the Allies and passed through the official British archives as it eventually found its way to Edinburgh University, who recently sold it off as part of a larger collection (hence ink stamping to margin). From time to time, the government distributes excess stocks of Allied maps, along with smaller numbers of captured enemy examples, to various national institutions such as libraries, museums, universities etc. Scale of 1:500,000. In great condition. Please see my other WW2 (and WW1) maps, documents, photos etc. (Seller's Ref - 2U / 182)
