Description: A striking and unissued pair of World War Two British Army Royal Ordnance Corps Officer's Enamelled Collar Badges 1939-45 The RAOC were often another unsung & unheralded Regiment in WW-II history, but actually had a vital & critical role in, amongst many others, in keeping the British Army's front-line Regiments fully supplied with weapons & ammunition in combat. In addition they also were responsible for the maintenance of weapons, general military equipment & vehicles (before the Royal Electrical & Mechanical Engineers were created in 1942 to take over this latter & other technical roles). But one of the most important roles allocated in WW-II to the RAOC (and also the Royal Engineers) was bomb disposal in which one man in every 20 was lost in this hazardous task. A superb, completely unissued, pair officers RAOC coloured enamel collar badges, (complete with their original outfitter's label), these most attractive badges were found amongst war-time stock of Oswald Bailey a former military outfitters here in the South. For some reason each were sold separately and each is complete with its original price tag, one of 5/- (or 25 pence!) and the other 4.3d (21.5p) At war's end in May 1945 the owner's of Oswald Bailey immediately started buying up the army's now surplus stock of tents, canvas rolls, mess-tins & outdoor clothing and selling to the general public. This was immediately snapped up by a population deprived by war, so leading to Oswald Bailey later becoming a famous High Street camping & outdoor clothing retail company. Thanks for looking..!
