Description: antique original pre WW2 GAU BADGE TINNIE It measures about 1.5 “ long 1.25 “ wide Pin back No markings on the back Dark patina on the front and light corrosion on the back this is a diminutive WWII tinnie version of the WWI era ‘ Elephant Order Colonial Badge ‘ a smaller - cheaply made version of the rare AFRIKA elephant GAU badge ( GAU badges were pot metal or plastic lapel pins ,… given away for a small donation , during weekly fund raising drives ) it has a simple & cheap clasp on the back - with no markings ( the official medal was larger and would have had a more substantial clasp on the back ) The medal depicts an elephant on the front The lower part is covered with oak leaves and around the upper rim are the place names 'SÜDSEE * AFRIKA * KIAUTSCHOU' ( German colonies in Africa ) no makers marks with a single vertical pin. German Colonial Badge, also called Elephantenorden (Elephant's Order). Awarded to all German colonials who, during the First World War, and later in the former German colonies, were acting or serving on behalf of these colonies. The badge was instituted in October 1921 and was to be purchased by the recipient. By 21 November 1936 some 8,000 were issued and it is assumed that later awards could have been obtained during the WWII period 1937 - 45.
