WWI or WW II Taylor Brass Military Pocket Watch Style USCE Compass

Description: Selling my antique/vintage WWI or WWII Taylor brass military pocket watch style compass stampeded USCE for United States Corps of Engineers. The compass has been in the family for a longtime, but I don’t know who had it first, and there is no one left to ask, so I really don’t know its age or origin. I have found conflicting information, but what I have been able to learn from museum, historical, and C of E websites is this style compass began being manufactured by Taylor Instrument Companies, located in Rochester, New York, beginning in 1917. The WWI era hunter cased Taylor military compasseswere made with a nickel case and stamped US while the ones manufactured for the US Corps of Engineers were made of brass and stamped USCE. Whether WWI or WWII era, this is a very nice example of an antique U. S. Army Civil Engineer pocket compass dating from the early 20th century. The compass is cased in a brass case with a loop so it could be attached to a chain. There is a small dent in the case lid and some mild ware, but it isotherwise in excellent condition. Opens nicely and closes securely and the hinge is in good condition. The brass has a nice patina reflecting its age, but could be easily be shined up if desired. The compass measures approximately 1-3/4" in diameter and 2-1/2” from top of the ring to bottom of case with a depth of about 3/8” when closed. Inside, the face is marked Taylor, and the glass is clear without cracks or scratches. The dial is clean and clear to read and marked with the compass bearings, graduated every 5º and numberedevery 20º, with luminous cardinal points and needle on a jeweled pivot which points north correctly.
