The vast majority of Germans in World War II were Catholics. Like many funeral services today, a small card (usually baseball card size) were printed with a photo and brief history of the deceased. This custom has existed for several centuries and was very prevalent during the Second World War. This particular card was printed in remembrance of: Josef Schmidbauer Josef was a Corporal in the Infantry and was a veterans of the military campaigns in France, Holland, and Russia. He was awarded the Iron Cross 2nd Class and Silver Infantry Assault badge - both of which are visible on his uniform in the studio portrait. He passed from grenade shrapnel wounds in Russia on January 15, 1944 at the age of 27. If you have any questions or concerns, do not hesitate to contact us.
