The vast majority of Germans in World War II were Catholics. Like many funeral services today, a small card (usually baseball card size) were printed with a photo and brief history of the deceased. This custom has existed for several centuries and was very prevalent during the Second World War. This particular card was printed in remembrance of: Matthias Schnaitmann Matthias was a Corporal in a Luftwaffe-Feld-Division. Luftwaffe-Feld-Divisions were Infantry units composed of surplus ground grew when more manpower was needed. He served for 3 years and 3 months on July 22, 1944 near Lithuania at the age of 33.
