Description: Hello up for auction a very rare medal. This was acquired at the estate of a 1 Star Generals collection. He had a vast collection of military items that we were able to acquire. This medal is in mint shape for its age and still in the original box. Original World War II US Medal with slotted brooch and stitched sides. Planchet is formed in the shape of the Bataan Peninsula; reads BATAAN MEDAL on the obverse, with insignia for the 200th and 515th Coast Artillery. Reverse reads "AWARDED TO THE GALLANT NEW MEXICO SOLDIERS FIGHTING FOR THEIR COUNTRY WITH THE 200TH COAST ARTILLERY (AA) ON DECEMBER 7, 1941 BY THEIR STATE." This medal is also sometimes referred to as the 200th CA Philippine Service Medal, awarded to soldiers who were serving at Bataan under General Douglas MacArthur and were subsequently captured by Japanese forces and suffered as Prisoners of War. 1,816 Men served with the 200th / 515th Coastal Artillery from New Mexico, and of that number 987 survived the war; This medal was struck to honor their service and to recognize the grueling conditions under which they served their country as one of the very first units to engage in combat with the Japanese, and as one of the most harrowing Prisoner of War experiences in military history, the Bataan Death Marc
