Description: RARE FIND!! This is a set of 9 prints from the 1932 limited edition of only 200 copies titled “THIRTY PERSONALITIES AND A SELF PORTRAIT,” from the original drawings by Wyndham Lewis. This was the ONLY full book of portraits ever published during the artist’s lifetime. PERFECT FOR A CHIC GALLERY WALL! ****PLEASE NOTE: If interested in purchasing the set matted and framed, let us know and we can provide a quote as well as an estimated shipping price**** This set will make a terrific focal point on a library wall, or down a long hallway or any spot that needs a bit of 1930’s style! (As one decorator friend told me, “That’s a lot of bang for the buck!” Printed by Desmond Harmsworth in London, each lithographic print is signed in the plate by Mr. Lewis. The folio as issued contained 31 plates with tissue guards and a brief forward. Mr. Lewis only signed and numbered the limitation page of each copy. None of the individual portraits were numbered or signed individually by Wyndham Lewis or the publisher. This lot includes the following 9 portraits and the accompanying tissue guard for each: 1. AUGUSTUS JOHN, ESQ. 2. STELLA BENSON 3. G.K. CHESTERTON, ESQ. 4. NAOMI MITCHISON 5. CHARLES COCHRAN, ESQ. 6. VISCOUNTESS RHONDDA 7. VISCOUNT (LORD) ROTHERMERE 8. MRS. DESMOND FLOWER 9. NEWMAN FLOWER, ESQ. Photos show each portrait. All are in very good condition, given their age of 92 years. Almost all show some degree of foxing— mainly at the outermost edges. When one mats and frames the works, most of that is quite well concealed. Three of these prints (Mitchison, Cochran and Rhondda) were matted and framed, so each has light traces of the effect of archival tape at the very top 1/4” or so, which is barely visible and would of course be covered when matted. None are torn. (See detail photos). The accompanying tissue guards show varying degrees of curling and foxing, given tha extremely delicate tissue subject to aging and creasing over the past 9 decades. (Again, see photos). IMPORTANT: PHOTOGRAPHS OF the folio, title page & signed/numbered limitation page from which these prints are offered is shown strictly as reference for the buyer and are not included. I must apologize for the poor photography, which I did myself (with a broken shoulder!) It’s hard for me to use the camera without full steadiness of both hands. Rest assured, the pages are uncut and straight. (PIC #1 is taken off screenshots from National Portrait Gallery, and is a far better representation of the actual shade of the paper these are printed upon, as well as having the distinct advantage of being photographed at a perfect perpendicular angle). All other photos were taken by yours truly. This truly is a rare opportunity to fill a wall with stylized 1930’s portraits that represent that unique moment in time between the wars that was also captured in the literature of Evelyn Waugh and Nancy Mitford. Think Brideshead (the SALTBURN of its day), Vile Bodies, and Love In A Cold Climate… The storied personages in this grouping include artists, writers, publishers, and aristocrats of their day — equal parts Bloomsbury Circle, West End, Fleet Street and Claridge’s—drawn with the consummate style and skill that Mr. Lewis excelled at. Wyndham Lewis was one of the founders of the British modern art movement known as “VORTICISM,” and no less an expert as the British painter Walter Sickert called Lewis “the greatest portraitist who has ever lived on earth.” In fact, when the Academy refused to exhibit a Lewis portrait in 1938, the painter Augustus John (portrait 1) resigned in disgust. The entire collection of these portraits is in the National Portrait Gallery, London. The museum’s website has much information on Lewis and the subjects of his portraits. Because of the rarity and value of this lot, it will be sent fully insured and require signature upon delivery. Please ask any questions prior to purchase. Payment due within 48 hours of purchase.
