Description: (Yip) Harburg E. Y (1896-1981) was born of Russian-Jewish immigrant parents on Manhattan's Lower East Side and attended the City University of New York. On Broadway he wrote scripts (with Fred Saidy) and lyrics for the political musicals Bloomer Girl (1944, with composer Harold Arlen) and Finian's Rainbow (1947, with composer Burton Lane). In 1951 Yip co-wrote the Broadway musical Flahooley, which satirized the results of capitalist overproduction. Yip Harburg also created lyrics for numerous film musicals from 1930 to 1950, including The Wizard of Oz (with composer Arlen). In this classic, Yip wrote all the words to all the songs, and was the final editor and a significant contributor to the script. Yip wrote the lyrics to over 500 songs with a variety of com-posers. With Jay Gorney, he created the classic anthem of the Depression, "Brother, Can You Spare a Dime?" (1932). His other standards include "April in Paris" (1932, with Vernon Duke), Win Any Over Me Ra 033, (1939, also with Arlen), and "How Are Things in Glocca Morra?" (1947, with Lane). Yip also wrote one other volume of satiric light verse, At This Point in Rhyme. "Blacklisted" through the 50's by film, radio and television for his liberal political views, Yip's unique vision 1s Still timely. His lyrics and shows inform us about social injustices and provide inspiration for change. As Broadway's social conscience, his commentaries in song and story made Yip Harburg a major contributor to 20th century American musical theatre. --from the book
